PA rejects disarming Gaza resistance: Fatah leader

The Palestinian Authority (PA) rejects U.S. proposals for disarming Palestinian resistance factions in the Gaza Strip, a Fatah leader said Wednesday.

"The Palestinian leadership and Fatah movement reject U.S. proposals for disarming the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip," Zeyad Abu Ein, a member of Fatah's revolutionary council, told Anadolu Agency.

"The weapon of the Palestinian resistance in Gaza aims at putting an end to the [Israeli] occupation," he added.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry earlier said that any solution to the crisis between Israel and Palestinian factions in Gaza should lead to disarming Hamas and other Palestinian groups.

Abu Ein said that the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority has been working to halt bloodshed in the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Strip has been ravaged by relentless Israeli attacks since July 7 with the stated aim of halting rocket fire from the blockaded Palestinian territory.

At least 1283 Palestinians – mostly civilians – have been killed and more than 7100 others injured in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip.

Gaza-based Palestinian factions, meanwhile, have continued to fire rockets at Israeli cities in response to the ongoing Israeli attacks.

Israel's military operation, dubbed operation "Protective Edge," is the self-proclaimed Jewish state's third major offensive against the densely-populate Gaza Strip – which is home to some 1.8 million Palestinians – within the last six years.
