Police officer killed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula

A police officer was killed in the North Sinai city of Arish on Monday, security sources said.

"Unidentified assailants gunned down the officer, who worked at the North Sinai Security Directorate, as he was heading to a local bank," the sources told Anadolu Agency.

He was rushed to the city's military hospital, but quickly succumbed to his injuries, they added.

The attack came only hours after the death of 24 Egyptian policemen in an early Monday morning attack in northern Sinai.

The incident was the deadliest of its kind since August of last year, when 16 Egyptian border guards were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen at a border checkpoint near the North Sinai city of Rafah.

Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, has seen almost daily attacks by unknown assailants since ousted president Mohamed Morsi's July 3 overthrow by the military.
