An Egyptian policeman was seriously wounded on Sunday in a drive-by shooting in Zagazig, the capital of the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya, a security source said.
The 35-year-old policeman was immediately rushed to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries, the source told Anadolu Agency.
A police force stationed near to the site of the attack fired at the fleeing militants, killing one of them and wounded the other, said the source.
Sharqiya has been the site of repeated attacks by militants against security forces.
Egypt has generally been in turmoil since the 2011 popular uprising that ousted longstanding autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
The count has recently seen an unprecedented rise in militant attacks targeting security forces, which have left dozens of security personnel dead since the army's July's ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.
