A barrel bomb attack carried out in Syria's largest city on Friday has killed 11 people including women and children, opposition groups are claiming.

Syrian civil defense officials told Anadolu Agency that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad dropped the bomb in Aleppo's opposition-held Haydaria neighborhood; tens of others were wounded in the incident.

The same sources said they were conducting efforts to recover people trapped under the rubble of collapsed homes.

The opposition Local Coordination Committee of Syria claimed that army warplanes and helicopters were shelling Masakin Hananu, Kadi Asker, Tel Rifaat and Bazaa neighborhoods.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011; the UN has said more than 191,000 people are believed to have been killed in the conflict.
