A senior Al-Qaeda leader and six rebels have been killed in an army offensive in southern Yemen, a military source said on Thursday.
Abu Moselm al-Uzbeki and six Al-Qaeda rebels were killed during the operation – which remains ongoing – in the southern Abyan province, the source was quoted as saying by Yemen's official news agency.
A number of Al-Qaeda rebels were also captured during the operation, the source said.
According to the source, army forces have cleared vast swathes of Abyan's Al-Maajala district.
Suspected Al-Qaeda rebels remain active in several parts of southern Yemen, from which they continue to stage sporadic attacks on army and police targets.
Dozens have been killed within the past week in renewed clashes between rebels and army troops in the country's southern regions.
