A soldier kidnapped by separatist militants on Wednesday in Yemen's southern Ad Dali' province was found dead on Thursday, eyewitnesses said.
"Southern separatists abducted the soldier yesterday, killed him and dumped his body in a sewage-disposal area in central Ad Dali' city," one eyewitness said, noting that the body had been mutilated.
No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction and killing.
In recent months, southern Yemen has seen violent clashes between the army and suspected separatist militants who call for secession from the country's north.
Yemeni army shells hideouts of pipeline attackers
The Yemeni army on Wednesday shelled areas inhabited by tribesmen suspected of bombing an oil pipeline earlier this week in the eastern Maarib province, tribal sources said.
Army forces shelled the Al-Hawa district, where tribesmen suspected of blowing up the pipeline, the sources said.
According to the sources, artillery shells hit unpopulated areas near the home of Salem Al-Agi, the main suspect in the pipeline attack.
No casualties were reported.
On Monday, armed tribesmen blew up the pipeline, demanding payment in exchange for allowing government technicians to repair it.
Oil pipelines are the frequent targets of militant attacks in several Yemeni provinces.
