The leaders of Syria, Turkey and Qatar on Monday threw their weight behind mediation by Damascus and Riyadh to resolve the political crisis in Lebanon, the Syrian, Turkish news agencies reported.

The three leaders "expressed their commitment to a solution to the Lebanese crisis based on Syrian-Saudi good offices so as to achieve understanding between the Lebanese and avoid a deterioration of the situation," they said.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and Syria's President Bashar al-Assad met in Damascus to discuss the crisis sparked by a UN probe into ex-Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri's assassination in 2005.

Recently, a dispute between political groups in Lebanon over the investigation into the Hariri assassination, resulted with the resignation of 11 ministers from the cabinet.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah has said he believes indictments would implicate members of his party and has accused the UN-backed Hariri tribunal of being part of a US-Israeli plot.

Earlier Monday in Beirut, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman postponed parliamentary negotiations on the naming of a new premier to allow time for efforts to solve the political turmoil in the country.

"The consultations were postponed until January 24 and 25 after all factions agreed on it," a statement from the presidential palace said.

Suleiman had been scheduled to begin discussions with the various parliamentary blocs on Monday with the aim of naming a new premier, who will be tasked with forming a government.

The statement emphasized the significance of finding a solution to the government crisis in Lebanon, within the scope of the good willed efforts initiated by Syria and Saudi Arabia. It also called for measures to prevent the situation from further deteriorating.

The three leaders welcomed the decision of the Lebanese parliament to postpone discussions (to form a new government) until political efforts to re-establish stability in Lebanon becomes more concrete.
