A group of Jewish settlers on Wednesday stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the city of Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) for the second day in a row, a compound guard said.
"About 90 settlers under Israeli police protection stormed the Al-Aqsa compound through the Al-Mgharba Gate," Al-Aqsa guard Naser Qous told Anadolu Agency.
"The settlers tried to perform Talmudic rituals inside the compound, but Al-Aqsa guards stopped them from doing so," he added.
In a separate incident on the same day, Qous said, 35 Israeli intelligence personnel had also stormed the flashpoint compound. They inspected the Al-Qibali and Marawani mosques, in addition to the iconic Al-Aqsa Mosque, the guard said.
Wednesday's incident was the second of its kind by Jewish settlers in as many days.
On Tuesday, 19 Jewish settlers backed by Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque before being evacuated from the area amid fears of violence after they were confronted by Palestinian students.
In recent months, groups of extremist Jewish settlers – often accompanied by Israeli security forces – have repeatedly entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. The frequent violations anger Palestinian Muslims and occasionally lead to violent confrontations.
For Muslims, Al-Aqsa represents the world's third holiest site.
Jews refer to the area as the "Temple Mount," claiming it was the site of two prominent Jewish temples in ancient times.
Israel occupied Al-Quds during the 1967 Middle East War. It later annexed the holy city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state.
Israeli forces detain 13 Palestinians
Israeli forces detained 13 Palestinians on Wednesday on the grounds that they were fugitives, witnesses said.
The forces detained seven people in Hebron, one in Bethlehem, three in Nablus and two in the Burin town of southern Nablus during house raids, witnesses further confirmed.
Israeli officials have not made any official statement concerning the operations so far.
Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers killed one Palestinian, a 32 year old member of the Islamic Jihad Movement, in the east of Gaza Strip and injured a nine-year old child, said Palestinian Health Ministry officials.Güncelleme Tarihi: 08 Ocak 2014, 17:59
