Obama invites Palestine's Abbas to Washington

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he will go to Washington this month to meet U.S. President Barack Obama in an effort "to advance" the Middle East peace process.

"They invited us in an attempt to push the peace process forward," Abbas said in an interview published in the Palestinian newspaper al-Ayyam on Sunday.

Abbas's last meeting with Obama was in September at the United Nations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also attended that meeting.

The Arab League on Saturday endorsed a proposal for the Palestinians to hold U.S.-mediated indirect negotiations with Israel. The Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) will meet later this week and is also expected to approve the indirect talks.

Abbas said the talks would get under way once both bodies had given their nod.
