OIC to set up impartial commission over deadly Israeli attack

The executive committee of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) convened in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in the ministerial level after a raid by Israeli forces on a six-ship flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Israeli soldiers attacked a fleet of boats carrying 700 international activist and 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid heading to Gaza, killing 9 Turkish activists.

The ship was also carrying activists from Britain, Germany, Malaysia, Belgium, Ireland and elsewhere.

In an interview with the A.A following the meeting, OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said, "all members of the executive committee extended full support to Turkey policy."

"We commiserated with those who lost their beloved ones in the raid. All aspects of the issue were discussed at the meeting. We decided to set up an impartial commission to investigate the attack and to take steps against such illegal attacks by Israel," he said.

"Another topic high on agenda of the meeting was lifting of the blockade on Gaza. We also decided to make efforts to this end," he said.

"I also urged the OIC member states to rally and work together with friendly regional groups and other UN member states to convene a meeting of the UN General Assembly within the framework of 'Uniting for Peace' in order to ensure that the UN shoulders its responsibility in lifting the oppressive blockade on Gaza strip," the secretary-general added.

Leaked post-mortem results showed that the activists were killed by a hail of 9mm bullets, many fired at close range. Five of the nine were shot in the head.

The Turkish attorney general’s office said it was collecting witness statements.
