Qassam Brigades unveils 'homemade' sniper rifle

The Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Palestinian resistance faction Hamas, unveiled Sunday a homemade sniper rifle that the group said was used by its fighters in combat against Israeli troops who crossed into the Gaza Strip amid an ongoing offensive in the blockaded enclave.

The brigades posted a video on its website, showing its fighters using the rifle in action in clashes with Israeli troops.

The 14.5mm sniper rifle, which can hit a target at a range of 2 kilometers, was named Ghoul after Adnan al-Ghoul, the late head of the brigades’ manufacturing unit who was assassinated by an Israeli airstrike in 2004 in Gaza City, the group said.

Israel has been pounding the blockaded Gaza Strip – home to 1.8 million people – since July 7, leaving at least 1810 Palestinians dead and around 9400 others injured. Most of the victims were civilians.

Gaza-based resistance factions, meanwhile, have continued to fire rockets at Israeli cities in response to the ongoing Israeli attacks.

At least 64 Israeli soldiers have also been killed in battles with Palestinian fighters and three civilians in rocket attacks.

However, the brigades claims to have killed as many as 161 Israeli troops since the start of Israel's ground assault on the Gaza Strip.
