Israeli soldiers late Monday peppered areas of the southeastern Gaza Strip with heavy machinegun fire but no injuries were reported among Palestinians, eyewitnesses said.

Israeli soldiers deployed on the southeastern border with the Gaza Strip, they added, had opened fire on areas along the border separating Gaza's city of Khan Younis from southern Israel.

They added that the shooting had been accompanied by unusual movement by Israeli military equipment toward the border fence.

Witnesses also said Israeli surveillance planes had flown at low altitudes over the area.

"The shooting, however, didn't cause any human casualties," Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra told Anadolu Agency.

Israel has established a 300-meter buffer zone along its border with the besieged Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces frequently open fire on Palestinians who attempt to approach the border fence.
