The Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), which planned to celebrate the traditional Kurdish Nowruz holiday in 45 different locations this year, has made a major decision.
The BDP has decided to only celebrate the Nowruz holiday in Diyarbakir on March 21, which is indicated as the day in which the disarmament of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) will happen.
The BDP will celebrate Nowruz with the "Freedom for Ocalan, status for Kurds status" slogan, referring to the jailed PKK leader at Imrali island who served a role in the negotiation process.
The symbolic Nowruz fire will be lit at 45 different centers this year. The March 17 celebrations will take place at 18 locations, including Istanbul, Adana and Mersin.
According to Turkish media, the BDP will hold the finale celebration of Nowruz in Diyarbakir. The Nowruz committee has not arranged another program for the day of March 21.
It is expected that important decisions about the ongoing peace process will be made during the program in Diyarbakir.
Ample participation from towns and cities in the region is expected in the March 21 celebrations.
As the Imrali negotiation process between the government and PKK was in progress, the March 21 Nowruz holiday was constantly referenced as the day of disarmament.
It is also expected that the BDP will announce the PKK’s decision of disarmament on Nowruz.
The BDP, which indicated March 21 as “the transitional day of a historic period," also stressed that the process initiated at Imrali island by Abdullah Ocalan will progress to a higher level.
The BDP had wanted to hold the Nowruz celebrations in Diyarbakir on March 18 last year. But after the Governor's Office did not grant permission, incidents had taken place during the unauthorized demonstrations.Güncelleme Tarihi: 06 Mart 2013, 15:27
