Chairman of the Forensic Medicine Institute of the Turkish Ministry of Justice Dr. Haluk Ince said on Friday that the date for exhumation of Turkey's eighth President Turgut Ozal would be certain in one or two days.
Speaking to the Anadolu Agency (AA)on Friday, Dr. Ince stressed that Turgut Ozal's body would be exhumed from his mausoleum in Istanbul for an investigation into his unexpected death.
Turgut Ozal died on April 17, 1993 in his office in Ankara of what doctors said was a "heart attack."
No autopsy was performed on Turgut Ozal's body then.
"We will take samples from late President Ozal's body, where he was laid to rest, and around 50 centimeters below from where he was resting," Dr. Ince stressed.
We will seek for all possible materials that may have led to Ozal's demise, Dr. Ince indicated.
Following a comprehensive analysis on Ozal's death, we will prepare a report in which we will list the possible reason(s) for Turgut Ozal's death, Dr. Ince said.
"We may not be able to reach a conclusion following our analysis. Certain materials we discover may be those that did not lead to Ozal's demise," Dr. Ince indicated.
The result of our analysis may not be made public before two months, Dr. Ince stated.
"Our greatest disadvantage here is time. Had this analysis taken place right after Ozal's death, we could have been more successful," Dr. Ince noted.
"Turgut Ozal's remains will be placed in a room at our institute. Only five people would be authorized to enter that room," Dr. Ince said.
Following a state report, Prosecutor Kemal Cetin, responsible for an ongoing investigation regarding Ozal's demise, on September 17 issued an order for his exhumation and sent it to the top prosecutor in Istanbul.
The Ozal Family was opposed to exhumation due to religious reasons. Only Ahmet Ozal, the son of late President Turgut Ozal, would be present when forensic experts exhume Ozal's body in the next few days.
