Fatah leader upbeat on Erdogan presidency

A leader of the Palestinian Fatah movement on Friday expected the recent election of Recep Tayyip Erdogan as president of Turkey to reflect positively on Turkey's role in the Palestinian national cause, the Middle East region and on the world stage.

"We're optimistic about Erdogan's election as president and the appointment of Ahmet Davutoglu as [Turkey's] prime minister," Fatah leader Yehia Rabah told Anadolu Agency.

He said the two Turkish politicians would boost their country's status in the Middle East and the rest of the world.

"Davutoglu is an Islamic thinker and a distinguished politician," Rabah said. "He played an outstanding role in clarifying the Turkish role in the region."

Rabah expected Erdogan and Davutoglu to work together to support the Palestinian cause and help end Israel's occupation of Palestinian land.

Erdogan, who won a landslide victory in Turkey's presidential election earlier this month, tasked Davutoglu with forming a new government on Thursday.
