Eight members of the secularist Support for Modern Life Association (CYDD) were charged by a prosecutor yesterday with membership in Ergenekon, a clandestine gang whose members are accused of having attempted to overthrow the government.
Dozens were detained in an earlier police raid targeting the Ergenekon organization in April of last year, including CYDD members as well as members of the Atatürkist Thought Association (ADD) and the Modern Education Foundation (CEV).
A lawsuit was filed against eight people, including Professor Ayse Yuksel, the deputy chairperson of CYDD, and Gulseven Yaser, the former chairperson of the Modern Education Foundation (CEV), on charges of being a member of the Ergenekon organization
The CYDD and ADD previously organized massive protests against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), known as republican rallies, in the 2007. Two Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul deputies, Necla Arat and Nur Serter, who were not deputies at the time, were also among the organizers of the well-known rallies.
