Swoboda calls on Turkish gov't for social peace
Socialist Group President of the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda on Monday called on the Turkish government to contribute to social peace not conflicts.

Swoboda released a statement in regards to Taksim Gezi Park incidents in Istanbul.

"Turkish government must contribute to social peace not conflicts by politically motivated projects and police violence," Swoboda said.

Stating that the government was unsuccessful in incorporating the NGOs into the discussion about the new project at Gezi Park, Swoboda called on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to stop his security forces to interfere with citizens in Istanbul and stop his project.

"If Turkey is to continue moving on the road of EU membership, the Turkish government should learn to incorporate the opposition and NGOs in the process to establish national unity. Unfortunately, the current attitude of Mr. Erdogan indicates that himself and the party he is leading don't want to remain in the compulsory democratization process," he noted.
