Turkey to exempt police from military service

Turkey's interior minister has said that a bill on the military service duty of Turkish police officers was sent to the parliament on Monday.

The draft law aims at exempting police officers with 10 years experience from military service.

"Our goal is to enable the discussion of the bill by the relevant parliamentary commission this week and its ratification by the General Assembly next week," Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay told a group of reporters in capital Ankara.

"According to the latest bill, from now on, police officers will be totally exempt from military service. Regardless of the schools they graduated from, policemen will not perform military service," Atalay said.

The minister said that the new procedure depended on one condition, which was 10 years of experience at the Police Department.

"Previously there was the condition of at least 7 years of experience. We have now increased it to 10 years. Police officers should not quit their profession for 10 years. If they quit before completing such period, they will have to perform military service," he said.

Atalay noted that 2,500 police officers currently performed military service and they would be discharged once the bill became a law.

The minister said 38,000 active police officers had not performed their military service duty, adding these people would also be exempted from military service with the bill in question.

According to the bill on the military service duty of Turkish police officers, call and conscription procedures will be delayed for the personnel working under the classification of security services at the central and provincial organizations of the Police Department; those who currently receive education at police training institutions and will resume duty at the Department upon graduation; as well as those who have been successful in the entry examinations of these institutions but have not performed military service yet.

Among these individuals, the ones who have completed a 10-year service period at the Police Department will be considered to have performed military service.

The personnel, who will be performing military service at the time the regulation enters into force, will be discharged and sent back to duty.
