Turkey's CHP proposes bill to lower election threshold

Turkish main opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP, submitted Thursday a bill to Parliament to lower nation's election threshold from 10 percent to 7 percent.

A CHP deputy, Hakki Suha Okay, argued that the current threshold caused problematic consequences regarding the legitimacy of the parliament in the past.

According to the bill, a political party, which wins most votes below 7 percent, threshold will also be able to obtain seats in the parliament only if total votes of above-threshold parties are less then 70 percent of total votes.

CHP said that the current 10 percent threshold could create problems that would make ineffective justice in representation.
