Turkey's Gul dismisses axis shift accusations 'ill-intention'

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Sunday that discussing whether Turkey's axis had shifted was ignorance and ill-intention.

Gul replied to questions of reporters on board the plane en route from Turkey to South Korea.

When he was reminded of some recent discussions on Turkey's axis, Gul said, "people should look at Britain, France and Spain. They have good relations with several countries all over the world. Do people talk about axes of these countries? Spain has special agreements and relations with the most revolutionist countries. No one talks about axis of Spain."

Gul said Turkey was a country which approved 98 percent of decisions made by the EU in foreign policy.

"It is absurd to discuss whether axis of Turkey is shifting by taking into consideration its relations with its neighboring countries or countries in its region," he said.

"We should focus on issues whether democracy is strengthened in Turkey and whether the country approaches to the EU or gets away from it. We should discuss these matters," he said.
