Opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli has discussed plans for Turkey's presidential elections with former President Suleyman Demirel.

Following talks with Demirel on Friday on the 21st anniversary of him becoming president, Bahceli stated that the purpose of his visit was to discuss possible options for his MHP party's election campaign.

Bahceli said: “There have been discussions on how the country’s future might look like."

“As the MHP, we want to share our views with the public. We do not want the election to take place in chaos and to have it be converted into a political crisis."

- Direct vote

Demirel was the ninth President of Turkey elected by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on 16 May 1993.

He served as president till 16 May, 2000.

The presidential election, to be held on 10 August, will be the first to elect a president through direct popular vote.
