President Abdullah Gül has ordered the State Audit Institution (DDK) to inspect several state institutions including the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM), the Turkish Presidency announced on Wednesday.

Among the many institutions are the Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay), the Turkish Green Crescent Society (Yeşilay) and the Turkish Patent Institute (TPE). The DDK, which is part of the President's Office, conducts investigations on the orders of President Gül under Article 108 of the Constitution.

It has earlier investigated the suspicious deaths of late President Turgut Özal and Grand Unity Party (BBP) leader Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu.

Early this year, the DDK also investigated the 2007 murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink on the orders of Gül following growing calls from the public and a European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruling that found Turkey guilty of failing to protect Dink's right to life and to carry out a thorough investigation into the officers who failed to take the necessary measures in light of early warnings and tips about the plot to kill Dink.
