Namik Kemal Zeybek has been elected new leader of the Democratic Party (DP).

The 10th regular congress of the political party was held in Ankara on Saturday with six candidates running in the election.

Zeybek became leader of the DP after winning votes of 566 out of 594 delegates in the third round of the voting.

Born in 1944, Zeybek graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1966. He joined the Motherland Party (ANAP) and elected deputy from Istanbul in the general election in 1987. He served as minister of culture from 1989 to 1991. After acting as chief advisor to former President Suleyman Demirel between 1994 and 1995, he was re-elected deputy from
Istanbul in 1995. He acted as minister of state of the coalition government of the Welfare Party (RP) and the True Path Party (DYP) till 1997.
