The news was provided by Automotive News, which explains that the new WLTP (World Harmonized Light Testing Procedure) regime, which came into force on 1 September, gives higher carbon dioxide readings.
This has allowed cars to be included in a higher tax category, while there is a risk that new rules might lift low tax incentives for low emission cars, which are currently applied in some countries.
Car makers have to decide whether the additional cost to fit a larger battery is worth responding to the incentives provided by tax legislation in some countries.
