NASA reveals new spacesuit for Mars mission

NASA has revealed a new spacesuit to be worn by the first astronauts to land and settle on the planet Mars.

The Z-2 spacesuit, though still only a prototype, features elements that will be used by future space travellers, including light-emitting patches and luminescent wire.

These features can also be customized to help identify individuals and will also have parts that will be built using 3D printers and laser scans.

The suits will now enter the testing phase in NASA's vacuum chambers and training pools.

"Each iteration of the Z-series will advance new technologies that one day will be used in a suit worn by the first humans to step foot on the Red Planet," NASA said in a statement, addinf that the Z-2 "pays homage to the spacesuit achievements of the past while incorporating subtle elements of the future".

However, NASA has admitted that the suits still need work as they lack protections from micro-meteorite strikes, extreme temperatures and radiation.
