Researchers at the University of Tennessee are looking to ways to make small changes to the surface of a huge asteroid which is on a collision course with the Earth after discovering that blowing it up could make the impact worse.

Asteroid 1950 DA, which has been given a one in 4,000 chance of hitting the Earth on 16 March, 2880, has the potential to bring an end to our planet as we know it, as it hurtles towards Earth at nine miles per second, meaning it could eventually hit at a speed of 38,000 miles per hour.

According to the the science journal Nature, the impact would be equivalent to 44,800 megatonnes of TNT exploding, causing tsunamis and major climate change.

On February 2013 anestimated 1,500 people were injured when an undetected meteor slammed into Chelyabinsk, Russia, releasing more than 30 times the explosive energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb which was dropped on Japan at the end of World War II.
