Unidentified gunmen on Monday abducted three policemen in Yemen's southern Ad Dali' city, a security source has said.

"Militants believed to belong to the separatist Southern Movement have kidnapped three policemen and taken them to an undisclosed location," the source told The Anadolu Agency.

He said the abductors had demanded the release of a separatist activist detained by security forces last week in the port city of Aden, where he was accused of arms possession.

There has not yet been any claim of responsibility for Monday's abductions.

Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since pro-democracy protests forced president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down in 2012 after 33 years in power.
